What Is the Difference Between ASTM A325 and ASTM A325M Structural Bolts?

2026 08/07

ASTM A325 and ASTM A325M are both high-strength structural bolts designed for steel construction applications. The main difference is that ASTM A325 is the inch-based (imperial) version, while ASTM A325M is the metric version. They share similar mechanical performance requirements, but their dimensions, thread systems, and designation methods are different.

ASTM A325 vs A325M: Basic Difference

ASTM A325 is a specification for high-strength heavy hex structural bolts in inch sizes, widely used in North American steel structures, bridges, buildings, and industrial steel connections.

ASTM A325M is the metric counterpart of ASTM A325, developed for international markets using the metric system. It covers metric heavy hex structural bolts with sizes generally from M12 to M36.

Item ASTM A325 ASTM A325M
Measurement System Inch (Imperial) Metric
Bolt Size Example 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 1" M12, M16, M20, M24, M30
Thread System Unified Thread (UNC) Metric Thread (ISO Metric)
Application Steel Structures Steel Structures
Bolt Type Heavy Hex Structural Bolt Metric Heavy Hex Structural Bolt
Strength Level High Strength High Strength
Typical Washer ASTM F436 ASTM F436M
Typical Nut ASTM A563 ASTM A563M

Mechanical Properties: A325 vs A325M

Although the dimensions are different, ASTM A325 and ASTM A325M have very similar mechanical requirements.

Both are:

  • Heat-treated high-strength structural bolts
  • Quenched and tempered steel fasteners
  • Designed for preloaded structural connections
  • Used with heavy hex nuts and hardened washers

The minimum tensile strength requirement is approximately 830 MPa (120 ksi) for ASTM A325M structural bolts.

Typical mechanical properties:

Property ASTM A325 ASTM A325M
Tensile Strength 120 ksi min 830 MPa min
Yield Strength Approx. 92 ksi Approx. 635 MPa
Material Medium Carbon Steel / Alloy Steel Medium Carbon Steel / Alloy Steel
Heat Treatment Quenched & Tempered Quenched & Tempered

ASTM A325 vs ASTM A325M Structural Bolt Sizes Comparison

Nominal Size ASTM A325 (Inch Series) ASTM A325M (Metric Series) Approximate Equivalent
1/2" 1/2"-13 UNC M12
5/8" 5/8"-11 UNC M16
3/4" 3/4"-10 UNC M20 × 2.5 3/4" ≈ M20
7/8" 7/8"-9 UNC M22 × 2.5 7/8" ≈ M22
1" 1"-8 UNC M24 × 3.0 1" ≈ M24
1-1/8" 1-1/8"-7 UNC M27 × 3.0 1-1/8" ≈ M27
1-1/4" 1-1/4"-7 UNC M30 × 3.5 1-1/4" ≈ M30

Head and Nut Dimensions Difference

ASTM A325 bolts use:

  • Inch series heavy hex head
  • Inch series heavy hex nut

ASTM A325M uses:

  • Metric heavy hex head
  • Metric heavy hex nut

Although visually similar, the wrench size and head dimensions are different. Example:

Bolt Size A325 Head Width A325M Equivalent
3/4" A325 1-1/8" Across Flats M20 A325M
1" A325 1-1/2" Across Flats M24/M27 A325M

They cannot normally be mixed because the thread pitch and nut compatibility are different.

Washer Difference: F436 vs F436M

ASTM A325 assemblies normally use: ASTM A325 Bolt + ASTM A563 Nut + ASTM F436 Washer

Metric assemblies use: ASTM A325M Bolt + ASTM A563M Nut + ASTM F436M Washer

The washer functions are the same:

  • Provide load distribution
  • Prevent surface damage
  • Support proper bolt tensioning

The difference is the dimensional system.

Similarities Between ASTM A325 and ASTM A325M

Both standards share:

1. Structural Application Both are designed for:

  • Steel buildings
  • Bridges
  • Steel towers
  • Industrial structures
  • Heavy steel fabrication

2. Heavy Hex Structural Design Both use:

  • Heavy hex bolt heads
  • Heavy hex nuts
  • Hardened washers

3. High Strength Performance Both provide:

  • High tensile strength
  • Reliable preload performance
  • Excellent fatigue resistance

4. Surface Treatment Options Available finishes include:

  • Plain finish
  • Hot-dip galvanized
  • Mechanically galvanized

Can ASTM A325 Replace A325M?

No direct replacement. Although the strength level is similar:

A325 ≠ A325M

The reasons:

  • Different thread systems
  • Different dimensions
  • Different nuts and washers
  • Different engineering calculations

For example:

A 3/4" ASTM A325 bolt should not directly replace an M20 ASTM A325M bolt without checking structural design requirements.

ASTM A325 and A325M Applications

ASTM A325 Hex Structural Bolts

Common applications include:

  • Steel building frames
  • Bridges and highway structures
  • Wind turbine towers
  • Transmission structures
  • Industrial plants
  • Heavy machinery foundations

ASTM A325 and ASTM A325M are two versions of high-strength structural bolts designed for steel construction. The primary difference is the measurement system: A325 uses inch dimensions, while A325M uses metric dimensions. Their mechanical performance, structural applications, and installation principles are very similar, but their dimensions and threads are not interchangeable.

For international steel construction projects, ASTM A325M Hex Heavy Bolts with F436M Washers provide a metric high-strength bolting solution equivalent in performance to ASTM A325 structural bolt assemblies.
